アメリカ文化論ゼミ（チャン エドワード ケイ）

The seminar will be an introduction to American studies, which is an interdisciplinary field of study focused on various aspects of American culture. We will organize our study of America around key topics (many of which are overlapping), such as national identity, race and ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, disability, globalization, immigration, regionalism, foodways, consumerism, power and authority, countercultures, and so on. The seminar will emphasize “active learning,” meaning students are expected to actively contribute to the class through participation, discussion based on homework assignments, presentations, among other things. The objective is to prepare students for researching and writing the graduation thesis.

Some things for you to consider if you are interested in this seminar:

1. You should be willing to speak, write, and listen in English, as the course will be entirely in English.
2. You should be prepared to participate in discussion (in other words, talk, think, and listen) every week.
3. You should be prepared to do work outside of class (i.e., homework), including reading, writing, and preparing presentations.
4. You should be prepared to learn and conduct academic research in various forms.
5. You should be prepared to write your graduation thesis entirely in English, including doing research in English. The topic of the thesis must be related to American culture.

髙橋みのりさん（2016年度　論系進級）

　アメリカ文化論ゼミでは、春学期はアメリカ映画をテーマに研究しました。具体的には、アメリカ映画の代表であるディズニーや西部劇などを、実際の作品の鑑賞を通して互いの意見や感想を英語で発信し合いました。また、研究し考察する土台として、映画研究のアプローチ方法や様々な視点について書かれた英語の文献を読みこみました。先生曰く学期や年で扱うテーマが変わるらしいので、映画以外の事も研究すると思います！
　少人数のゼミなので、毎回1人1人が活発に自らの意見を発する機会に恵まれています。また、チャン先生は1人1人にしっかり向き合ってくれるので、勉強意欲もますます強まります。また、大衆文化として長く親しまれている映画について、今まで持っていなかった視点からアプローチすることで、アメリカ映画と日本映画の繋がりや影響、優れた映画の撮影技術や編集技術について研究することができ、物語の面白さという物差し以外の様々な物差しを得ることが出来ました。
　ゼミのメンバーの中には、高い英語力を持つ人もいれば、これから自らの英語力を伸ばしたいという強い意思を持っている人もいるので、英語力で言えば互いに切磋琢磨できる素晴らしい環境だと思います。その上、優しいチャン先生のもと個性豊かな明るいメンバーが揃っているので、楽しいゼミ授業を受けることが出来るかと思います。

One of the most attractive things about this seminar is that you will learn various aspects of American culture. There will be a discussion between professor and all students. We will discuss about the culture background and the history as well. This seminar is also a platform to practice and improve English skills since all the written and oral work is required in English. Those who want to study American culture will all find what you want in this seminar.
