Seminar on Global Japanese Culture and Media IV(リーブズ クリストファー)

This seminar provides students with an opportunity to come together and actively explore Japanese culture, literature, intellectual history (philosopher and religion), mythology, and other related topics, in the context of both the premodern as well as the modern world. We will approach our sources from a comparative perspective, which means we will be bringing in material from any number of other cultures and different historical periods. Moreover, considering we will be exploring many sources via English translations, we will constantly be required to consider (and reconsider) the effect of these translations on our own understanding and research.

By approaching Japanese culture through the lenses of comparative studies and translations studies, it is hoped that students will be able to discover research topics that draw upon work from numerous academic disciplines, thereby producing something both creative and insightful.
