Seminar on Global Japanese Culture and Media Ⅱ(旧:Seminar on Performing Arts Culture in Japan)(高井 詩穂)

In this zemi, we approach Japanese culture from a global perspective, through aspects of visual culture, performance, and performing arts. “Performing arts” here are not limited to only performing arts in a narrow sense, such as Japanese theater, film, dance, music, festivals, etc., but also include literature, religion, folklore, art, history, thought, customs, and contemporary society, if considered through the concept of performance. For example, folklore could be approached from the perspective of oral storytelling and communal productions and rituals. We could approach each topic from the perspective of the performer, the audience, or both. Students will learn to incorporate various modes of media in their research, and are encouraged to set their own topics relatively freely. We welcome students with diverse interests who will stimulate each other throughout the two years of zemi.

The current students’ interest include: theater, architecture, art, music, religion, advertisement, yokai, and so on.
